Cement: The Foundation of Modern Construction

Cement is a finely ground, powdery substance that acts as the primary binding agent in concrete and mortar. While the term is often used interchangeably with concrete, cement is just one component of it. The most common type is Portland cement, produced by heating a mixture of limestone (calcium source) and clay or shale (silica, alumina, and iron source) in a kiln to form clinker at temperatures around 1450°C. The clinker is then ground with a small percentage of gypsum (to control the setting time) into the familiar gray powder. This process, known as calcination, triggers complex chemical reactions that produce calcium silicates, which are responsible for cement's hydraulic properties—its ability to set and harden when mixed with water through a process called hydration, forming a strong, rock-like mass.
